4. STUDENT POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

4.1 ATTENDANCE

Full-time students attending 300 hours of class per term will receive a warning when they miss 23 hours of classes and be put on attendance probation when they miss 33 hours of classes. They will have an interview with either the AD or the Director. Students who miss 45 hours of class will be dismissed from the program for that term. This policy may seem harsh, but it is necessary for students learning English in a non-English-speaking community to be exposed to the language and participate in classes as much as possible for successful performance.

Students who are attending classes part-time will have their hours prorated based upon the number of hours they are attending. Their warning and probation times will be shortened accordingly.

The preceding rules about missing class apply to every absence: doctor’s appointments, sickness, counseling appointments, trips to the bank or the airport, TOEFL or IELTS or other tests etc. are treated in the same manner.

Students who miss class due to attendance to activities mandated by their employers or sponsoring institution will not be marked absent. However, they will be responsible for making arrangements with their instructors to make up any work they may have missed.

Students who are between 1 and 14 minutes late to a class (including after a break) are considered tardy. Three tardies equal one absence. Students who are 15 minutes late or more to a class will be marked absent for that class hour.

If a teacher is late, students must wait 10 minutes and then notify the Bahar English Language Center.

Students who have been dismissed for excessive absences during one term will have to repeat all classes and will be on attendance probation in the following term. They will have a maximum of 35 hours of class to miss of the 300 hours of class in the term. They will receive a warning when they miss 18 hours of classes and be put on attendance probation when they miss 26 hours of classes. They will also have an interview with either the AD or the Director. Students who miss 35 hours of class will be dismissed from the program again.

OTHER ABSENCES

To be successful in our studies, students must have all their books and materials, do their homework, pay attention in class, and participate actively. In this way, they will make good progress in their English. For this reason, we have the following rules:

1. If a student sleeps in class, he/she will be marked absent for that class hour.

2. If a student uses his/her cell phone in class, he/she will be marked absent for that class hour, and his/her teacher will take the phone from him/her for the rest of the day.

3. If a student does not have his/her textbook(s) in class, after the first week, he/she will be asked to leave the class and will be marked absent for the class hour in which that textbook is used.

Although these rules may seem harsh, they will help everyone in the class to make progress and learn English faster. Faculty must apply these policies consistently in all their classes.
